Man quit sales job to rake in cash building flat pack furniture for DIY dunces

Dunelm is among firms letting people book an Airtasker assembler as they order beds and cabinets so shoppers can avoid complicated instructions

Hand Andys are nailing incomes of £30,000 a year by assembling flat-pack furniture for DIY dunces.

Tricky instructions leave so many people feeling right tools they are happy to pay up to £125 per item. Demand for experts is so high each is taking on an average 580 jobs a year. And at an average rate of £52 each, some have even quit their day jobs to go full-time.

Airtasker, which links people with assemblers, says prices vary from £35 for a TV unit to £125 for a bulky wardrobe. Dunelm is among firms letting people book an Airtasker assembler as they order goods. A spokesman said: “Constructing flat-pack is something you either relish or dread.”

Fais Chaudry quit his sales job after his assembling side hustle took off – and is on £31,000 a year. The married dad, 38, of West London, said: “Putting together flat-pack all day might be most people’s idea of a nightmare but I don’t mind it. I don’t blame people for being daunted. And it’s keeping me in work, so I cant complain.”

Flat-pack hater Gregg Ball, 45, of High Wycombe, Bucks, said: “I once took three hours making a single bed. If I can pay someone £50, it makes my life a lot easier.” Help with beds is Airtasker’s top request on 25%, followed by wardrobes (21%) and drawers (13%).
